‘Olive Branch’ offering …

focb April 23rd, 2008

Earlier today an email was circulated through the FoCB list. It was from Mary Cutler, Tippecanoe County Naturalist, concerning her being contacted by Jim Scott, manager of the Purdue Golf Course.

Whister Swans and Destruction on Celery BogMary said the phone conversation with Mr. Scott was a, “…productive discussion.”

The point of the phone call was, Mr. Scott wanted to meet with Mary to share plans and seek input on the replanting of the area east of the Celery Bog.

It seems the bottom line here is that plans are NOT set in stone for a replanting plan and Mr. Scott is open to ideas about what would be appropriate to replant in this area.

This is very heartening and welcome news.

A meeting is set for a time in the next week as schedules permit. Mary requested that Barny Dunning and Sally Weeks be included in the meeting for their knowledge and expertise in, “…wildlife values and appropriate woody species to include in this planting plan. ”

We were informed that Kevin Tungesvik (from Spence Nursery) is involved in the new wetlands construction near Northwestern - on the Purdue Golf Course; the presence of his knowledgeable expertise on wetland rehabilitation is encouraging

Mary also informed the FoCB, that Mr. Scott gave her the impression,

“… from our initial discussion … nothing would be done with a planting until AFTER the big NCAA Tourney, which will occur at the end of May.”

This expanded time frame should provide ample scale to consider all options, hear concerns and gather input for rendering a positive and effective remediation plan.

We are now focusing on the Celery Bog incident and the development of our ideas, concerns, expectations and anything else we wish to bring to the table for discussion.
